A
Word from Bird Lover Dempsey Essick There was a party going on…. My opinion of the perfect snowy day is to paint
while enjoying the company of my good friends at their feeding station
outside my studio window. When I awakened Sunday, January 25, I noticed a
flurry of activity outside the window and realized that the weatherman was
right- the snow was coming. I hurriedly filled my feeders so that the birds
would have plenty to eat. It began to snow at 8:00 and by 10:00am the ground
was covered and the show began. The excitement and enthusiasm on the other
side of the glass was worth paying to see. As the big birds flew in, the
little flew out, and vice versa. There was continual chirping and flapping of
wings. Occasionally tempers flared as impatience showed itself. I smiled as I
worked on my watercolor painting and enjoyed the sounds of the outside
celebration. There was indeed a party going on and I was the satisfied host.
To my amazement I counted 19 varieties of birds and was in awe observing
their different personalities and attitudes as the gaiety continued. Some
were polite, some rude, some loud, others utterly quiet, but all thankful for
the smorgasbord of birdie food. (I had even smeared peanut butter on the tree
limbs for woodpeckers to enjoy.) Though I love my bluebirds best, I still
enjoy the company of my other feathered friends. My best advice to you on how to spend your
next snowy day is to provide a proper feeding station about 5 ft from your
favorite window, sit back and let the good times roll. |
